SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eleven suspected drunken drivers were jailed overnight in three checkpoints held throughout the county, sheriff's deputies and police said Saturday.

Police and sheriff's deputies set up checkpoints overnight in Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove and Chula Vista, which netted 11 drunken driving arrests and four arrests for other offenses.

The checkpoints were conducted to remove drunken and unlicensed drivers from roadways to create a safer driving environment, said Sheriff's Sgt. Herbert Taft, of the Lemon Grove Station.

The Lemon Grove checkpoint held in the 6900 block of Broadway, saw 1,360 vehicles pass through between 8 p.m., Friday and 1:30 a.m. today, Taft said.

Deputies arrested two people for suspected drunken driving and one on a warrant. Deputies issued 18 citations for driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Deputies in Imperial Beach made six drunken driving arrests and three for other offenses including public drunkenness, at a checkpoint held overnight in the 900 block of Palm Avenue.

A similar operation took place in the 600 block of E Street in Chula Vista, between 6 p.m., Friday, and 2 a.m., Saturday. Officers arrested three people for suspected drunken driving, including one with a previous drunken driving arrest. Officers impounded 25 vehicles whose drivers had a suspended license or no license.

The checkpoints funded by grants from the Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
