Where to watch Fourth of July fireworks this year

Posted: Updated:

LA JOLLA (CNS) - Independence Day fireworks shows threatened earlier this year by lawsuits and state regulators are scheduled to go on as usual.

The annual pyrotechnics display at the La Jolla Cove was given a reprieve by a judge who stayed her previous order the city of San Diego had to follow environmental guidelines in issuing permits to organizers.

Environmental attorney Marco Gonzalez sued to stop the show, claiming that debris from the fireworks harmed sea life in an adjacent marine sanctuary.

Superior Court Judge Linda Quinn agreed with his contention that the city did not follow its own municipal code in handing out permits for fireworks shows, but delayed enforcement of her order until the city returns to her courtroom Aug. 31 with options on how it would comply.

Displays near all bodies of water were threatened with extinction over the past year when the state Regional Water Quality Control Board proposed requiring organizers to file for annual permits and prove they have cleaned up debris. The board ended up adopting less onerous rules.

Organizers of the shows say they cannot afford extra expenses because they already cost tens of thousands of dollars and are supported by donations.

Two fireworks shows, in Oceanside and at the Chula Vista Marina, were canceled this year because of financial problems.
