SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Murder charges have been filed against a man accused of beating a homeless man to death with a rock in a canyon near Hillcrest.

The medical examiner confirmed 31-year-old Jason Huggins passed away Wednesday morning at Scripps Mercy Hospital, where friends of Huggins had been holding vigil since the June 22 attack.

Prosecutors contend 37-year-old Joshua Larson hit Huggins in the head with a rock at a homeless camp along Washington Street near Highway 163.

Court documents obtained by News 8 show Huggins testified against Larson in a drug possession and grand theft case back in 2009. Larson later pleaded guilty, but after violating the terms of his probation was sent back to jail earlier this year. He was released in May, which was just one month before the attack. Larson's entered a not guilty plea to all charges.

Larson will be back in court on August 5. He's being held on $1 million bail.
