Marine killed in Camp Pendleton helicopter crash identified

Posted: Updated:

CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) – The Marine who died Wednesday when a Miramar-based Marine Corps helicopter crashed in the northwestern reaches of Camp Pendleton has been identified.

Sgt. Trevor Cook, 25, was a Crew Chief with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369 and has been in the Marine Corps since 2004. Five others were also on board with Cook when the helicopter crashed.

The Bell UH-1Y Huey went down for unknown reasons about 11:40 a.m. in the San Mateo area, near Camp Pendleton's border with San Clemente, according to a statement from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, where the aircraft is stationed.

Medics took all the crew members to hospitals with injuries of undisclosed severity.

One of the injured was pronounced dead by medical authorities after the crash, according to the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Public Affairs Office.

The accident sparked a small brush fire, according to Sgt. John Jackson, a Camp Pendleton spokesman. Emergency crews were able to extinguish the blaze before it got out of control, he said.
