CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A 49-year-old youth field hockey coach accused of carrying on a yearlong sexual relationship with a South Bay teenage girl pleaded not guilty Friday to eight charges, including sexual intercourse with a minor.

Jose Antonio Carrillo, of Encanto, was ordered held on $380,000 bail.

He faces up to seven years and eight months in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Mary Loeb.

Carrillo, a volunteer coach at Bonita Vista High School and an hourly instructor at Jackie Robinson YMCA in San Diego, allegedly carried on the sexual relationship with the girl for a year beginning in July 2010, the prosecutor said.

Carrillo was arrested Wednesday during a field hockey event in Chula Vista.

The case came to light early this week when the 16-year-old alleged victim's aunt saw the girl with an unfamiliar cell phone and asked where she had gotten it, according to Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge.

The teen said Carrillo had given it to her, then admitted to the alleged affair with the coach under further questioning, the captain said.

Carrillo is charged with four counts of oral copulation with a minor and two counts each of sodomy with a minor and sexual intercourse with a person under 18, Loeb said.

South Bay Judge Stephanie Sontag scheduled a bail review for Wednesday, along with a July 18 readiness conference and July 21 preliminary hearing date.
