Escondido man accused of causing fatal hit and run crash pleads not guilty

VISTA (CNS) - An Escondido resident accused of causing a fiery crash that killed an 18-year-old man then leaving the scene pleaded not guilty Thursday to a felony charge of hit-and-run causing death.

Juan Carlos Carrillo -- who was ordered, held in lieu of $50,000 bail -- faces four years in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Brock Arstill.

Carrillo, 20, was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in connection with the crash that killed Miguel Angel Rojas, Escondido police Officer S. Walters said.

The crash occurred about 2:15 a.m. Sunday, when Carrillo's eastbound 1995 Lexus ES300 collided with a Dodge Caravan at Washington Avenue and Elmwood Drive, Walters said.

Carrillo and two passengers ran from the crash site, leaving the wrecked Lexus behind, Walters said.

The minivan was engulfed in flames immediately after the crash. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office said Rojas, also of Escondido, died from smoke inhalation and burns. He was declared dead at the scene.

Vista Judge Steven E. Stone scheduled a readiness conference for July 18 and a preliminary hearing for July 21.
