Memorial bike ride and walk held for local cyclist

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Hundreds of people brought out their bikes and walking shoes Saturday to honor the memory of a local cyclist killed in a tragic crash.

On May 31, 40-year-old Nick Venuto was riding on a fenced off bike path along State Route 56 when an SUV lost control and plowed into him. He died at the scene.

Another cyclist was also hit and seriously hurt.

Saturday, a memorial bike ride and walk was held in Venuto's honor at Westview High School in Torrey Highlands.

Venuto's wife and parents say they are overwhelmed by the show of support

"I think it's amazing that there's so many people that are giving us support today. And, just amazed at the turnout," said Nick's wife, Deb Venuto.

"This is his road bike. And, actually, I'm riding it in memory of him. And…very honored to be doing that," continued Nick's father, Nick Venuto.

The CHP is still investigating the crash.
