SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Thousands of volunteers provided much needed assistance to San Diego's homeless veterans Monday as the 24th annual Stand Down concluded its three-day run.

During the Stand Down event held by the Veterans Village of San Diego, more than 3,500 volunteers provided medical and dental care, substance abuse counseling, legal services, food and clothing along with several other necessities to homeless veterans, their children and adult dependants.

More than 1,000 people who were down on their luck came out to San Diego High School's baseball field this weekend, including 56 female veterans and 34 children, event coordinator Darcy Pavich said.

Marines from MCAS Miramar helped with the event, setting up tents and some staying to help with care efforts. The Marines provided supplies throughout the weekend and led cleanup efforts as well.

"Stand Down is a belief in the triumph of the human spirit over extraordinary odds. It grows out of a conviction that the overwhelming number of homeless veterans on the streets of America is unacceptable, and that the veteran community itself must respond," event cofounder Jon Nachison said.

More than 200 Stand Down events take place annually throughout the country.
