ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A young man was found dead early Tuesday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head while he was holed up in a house near the Escondido city line, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The man, believed to be around 21, barricaded himself in the house in the 700 block of Stanley Avenue at about 7:20 p.m. Monday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies were called to the single-family residence to investigating a report of a possible suicidal man with access to guns, Sgt. Mark Haynesworth said.

When deputies arrived at the house, they heard the man talking hostilely over the telephone to someone, the sergeant said, adding that as he talked, the man walked onto a rear patio with what appeared to be a shotgun.

"(He) sounded angry at who he was speaking with and fired a weapon in a northern direction toward another residence," Haynesworth said.

Deputies eventually contacted the man over the telephone and he fired his weapon into the air again. While waiting for a sheriff's SWAT team and crisis negotiator to arrived on scene, deputies overheard several more shots from the distraught man's gun, Haynesworth said, noting that after the last shot, a deputy saw the man fall to the ground.

The SWAT team arrived and tactically entered the home, and found the man dead on a rear patio from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot to the head, according to the sergeant. Sheriff's Lt. David Gilmore said the discovery came at about 12:30 a.m.

The man's name was withheld pending notification of kin.

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) -  Sheriff's deputies along with Escondido Police responded to a call of shots fired Monday night to discover a man shooting randomly off his balcony.

The unidentified 21-year-old man had made contact with his family by phone and appeared to be intoxicated inside the home in the 700 block of Stanley Street in the unincorporated area of Escondido, according to Sheriff's Department spokesperson Jan Caldwell.

For more than three hours the man randomly shot a long rifle and a handgun off the balcony of the home. Those shots aimed into the air and not and any responding officers, according to Caldwell.

SWAT negotiators were in contact with the gunmen off and on Monday night, but when the shots stopped shortly before 11p.m. SWAT officers were devising a plan to approach the house.

As a precautionary measure nearby homes were evacuated.

The incident was ongoing at the time of this report.
