IMPERIAL BEACH (CNS) - The 31st U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition is set for Sunday, with sand sculptors competing for $21,000 in prize money.

Teams made up of three to 10 members are divided into professional and amateur divisions in an event organizers tout as the largest in the country.

They were encouraged to come up with designs based on memorable moments, significant landmarks or Southern California ideals.

Judging will take place after 2 p.m.

A street fair associated with the event will take place nearby on Seacoast Drive, and musical acts are scheduled to perform at the Pier Plaza stage.

The competition, which has at times been endangered financially during the past few summers, is being put on with help from Cox Communications, Dyson, Subway Restaurants, Vitamin Water, Foster Farms, Almond Accents, Geico and the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce.
