SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An apparently suicidal man cut his own throat in a vacant University Heights apartment Monday and set fire to the residence, authorities reported.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke wafting out of windows of the apartment in the 4600 block of Campus Avenue shortly after 5:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the small blaze, which mostly was confined to piles of rubbish in the apartment, the department's Maurice Luque said.

Inside the smoke-filled residence when emergency crews arrived was a bloodied man who apparently had slashed his throat, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said. Patrol personnel brought him outside, and medics took him to a trauma center. His condition was not immediately clear, according to Delimitros.

Several police officers were evaluated for possible smoke-related respiratory ailments, Delimitros said.
