SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The search is on Wednesday morning for two men who stole an ATM outside Rady Children's Medical Center and led police on a wild chase.

The suspects used a van to rip the ATM from its foundation outside the hospital in Linda Vista around 3:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Nearby construction workers saw the suspects' van dragging the cash machine, and one of the men tried to stop the thieves

"Everybody saw them dragging this metal thing behind the van and all the noise and the sparks, but only one confronted them. One jumped in his pickup truck," said Sgt. Fred Gerke with the San Diego Police Department. "They had kind of went around the building, and when he went around he was going to confront them. They sideswiped his truck in that location."

The suspects then ditched the ATM and a police chase ensued. However, officers backed off when the suspects went the wrong way on the freeway. The suspects got away, but without any money.

A complete suspect description hasn't been released, but witnesses say one of the suspects was wearing a plaid shirt.
