Driver miraculously survives crash on southbound 805

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist suffered major trauma when his vehicle plummeted off an Interstate 805 overpass just north of Miramar Road in San Diego in what police said may have been a suicide attempt, a fire dispatcher said Saturday.

"He was conscious and breathing. He had major trauma. The patient had to be extricated from the vehicle. And the vehicle was on its roof," she said.

The car landed in the southbound lanes of the freeway about 100 feet below at about 6:25 p.m. Friday, said San Diego police officer Dave Gibson.

Gibson said it appears the driver may have been attempting suicide.

Emily Sandan, 36, told San Diego Union-Tribune she had left the nearby Westfield University Towne Centre mall when she saw the car become airborne on the Eastgate Mall overpass and go over a guardrail.

"I saw the car falling in the air and then it hit the freeway," Sandan told the newspaper. "It was like something out of a movie. I was really shaken. It was incredible that they did not hit anyone on (the freeway)."
