CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Police used pepper-ball rounds to subdue a man who threatened suicide, ending a more than two hour standoff at a Chula Vista home, police said Saturday.

At approximately 7:10 p.m. Friday, police received a call reporting a suicidal man with a gun inside a residence in the 800 block of Palomar Street, near Andrea Street, according to a Chula Vista police report. Police saw the 26-year-old man walking with a rifle inside the home he shared with his mother.

Officers surrounded the home and a detective contacted the subject by telephone. The man admitted he wanted to kill himself, police said.

At approximately 9:25 p.m., the man opened the front door holding the rifle, Wedge said. Officers fired pepper-ball rounds and the man dropped the rifle.

He was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, police said.
