Stone Flats: Not by bread alone

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The phrase "have it your way" really applies to a new casual dining restaurant in Scripps Ranch. Stone Flats offers healthy, fresh, inexpensive items, personally designed by their customers.

"It's pretty simple, if you want to create your own you can. You pick a sauce, you pick a protein if you want a protein and then a vegetable, and then a cheese for the top," Brad Mason said.

Mixing and matching various meats, sauces, cheeses and toppings offers thousands of choices. The Stone Flats staff will guide you through the process, or you can just choose one of the house faves.

"We're going to make a buffalo chicken fave," Brad said.

It starts with either wheat or white flatbread.

"The first thing he's going to do is put on some buffalo wing sauce. Now he's going to put on some chicken, and the chicken is all free-range, hormone-free chicken," Brad said.

After that, Stone Flats adds red onions.

"We've got a five-cheese blend that goes on," Brad said.

Next it's oven-baked for three minutes, then topped with fresh celery.

"You can get a blue cheese or ranch dressing you can drizzle over the top," Brad said.

It's kind of like pizza that's good for you.

"Most of our faves -- we call them our signature flat breads -- are under 500 calories," Brad explained.

And what about the taste?

"This Stone Flats pizza is the best pizza, I think, in the world," a young customer said.

So after you've eaten fresh and healthy, watched your calories, you deserve a little dessert. Try the cinnaflat -- just a little bit of cinnamon toast, apple pie and ice cream.

At Stone Flats, they believe that man cannot live by bread alone. He must have toppings.
