Radio call released of police officer attack

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly slashed a policewoman's face with a knife during a struggle on a City Heights street over the weekend was behind bars Monday and facing a slate of charges, including attempted murder.

Officers arrested 43-year-old Michael Anthony Gonzalez on Saturday afternoon after two witnesses helped wrestle him to the ground, according to San Diego police.

SDPD Officer Kelly Doherty detained Gonzalez in the 4200 block of 34th Street after seeing him cut off a motorist as he rode a bicycle through the neighborhood about 12:30 p.m., police said.

Doherty ran a computer check on Gonzalez and determined that he had three outstanding warrants for his arrest. As the 26-year-old officer tried to take him into custody, the suspect tried to get back on his bike and ride off.

During an ensuing struggle, Gonzalez allegedly pulled a knife and slashed the officer, who then used her electric stun gun in an attempt to subdue him.

Two men soon joined the scuffle and suffered minor injuries while dragging the knife-waving suspect to the ground and holding him down until police could handcuff him.

Medics took Doherty to a hospital for treatment of a cut to her chin.

Gonzalez was booked into county jail on suspicion of more than a dozen charges, including resisting arrest, assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of attempted homicide.

The incident took place about a mile and a half from the site of a shooting that killed a San Diego police officer a week earlier.

Jeremy Henwood, a four-year SDPD officer and Marine reservist, was ambushed by a suicidal, shotgun-wielding petty criminal on University Avenue at 45th Street on the evening of Aug. 6. Henwood, 36, died in a hospital early the next morning.
