Truck driver arrested for suspected DUI after I-8 crash

Posted: Updated:

EL CAJON (CBS 8) – One person was taken to a local hospital, after a car they were riding in crashed into a truck late Monday morning on Westbound Interstate 8 in El Cajon.

It happened at about 10:45 a.m. Monday along westbound I-8 just past north Johnson Avenue. The CHP says the driver of a flatbed truck made an unsafe lane change directly in front of a red Mustang.

The driver of the Mustang, 44-year-old Pejman Sagart, reacted quickly.

"I was just pulling on the ramp and while I'm driving, going 45-50 (mph), this driver in front of me all of a sudden slammed on his breaks and I swerved as best as I could. Had I not swerved I would have probably got killed," Sagart said.

Sagart's car was impaled by the scaffolding on the truck, which smashed through the front windshield, lifting the car off the ground.

The crash shut down the two right lanes of I-8 for a few hours, causing traffic to back up about a half-mile through El Cajon as emergency personnel extricated Sagart and his passenger from the Mustang.

The passenger was taken to a nearby hospital, while the driver of the truck, an unidentified 35-year-old man, was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Sagart sustained a cut on his hand and scratches on his forehead. He was thankful he could walk away.

"I'm thanking God I didn't get killed. Thank God for my quick reflexes. Somebody is watching over me," he said.

If you've ever been stuck sitting in traffic, you've probably seen motorcyclists cutting through lanes and whizzing by. It's a move called lane-splitting, and while it's potentially dangerous, it's perfectly legal.
