Radioactive sulfur caught in San Diego declared harmless

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A small amount of radioactive sulfur from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, has been detected here in San Diego.

Researchers at UCSD now say that the amount found, never posed a threat to human health.

Readings collected shortly after the tsunami in Japan, showed 1500 atoms of radioactive sulfur per cubic meter of air in La Jolla

Experts say this is an increase over normal levels, but is still a small amount.

UCSD researchers are now working with colleagues in Japan, to better understand how the radio active sulfur cycles through the environment.
