Cal Fire: 10 fires sparked by target shooting this year

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Cal-Fire says more and more brush fires in San Diego County are being started by target shooting.

At least 10 fires across the county have been sparked by recreational shooting so far this year; a big increase from two for all of last year.

The fires start when steel-tipped or steel-cored bullets, such as the one you see on your screen, hit rocks or blow apart.

The state has spent more than $250,000 fighting such fires, and Cal-Fire is asking the public to exercise extreme caution when target shooting.
