UCSD receives top ranking as a sustainable university

LA JOLLA (CNS) - UC San Diego was third "coolest" school in the annual ranking of the most sustainable colleges and universities released Wednesday by Sierra Magazine, the publication of the Sierra Club.

UCSD was honored for its co-generation plant that provides up to 85 percent of the school's electricity and heats more than 6 million square feet of building interiors. The university ranked 15th last year.

"Being green is part of our institutional DNA," Chancellor Marye Anne Fox said. "This ranking reflects the commitment, planning and hard work of our students, faculty and staff to implement sustainable solutions which will create a better future for us all."

The rankings were based on findings from a survey with questions in 10 categories: energy supply, efficiency, food, academics, purchasing, transportation, waste management, administration, financial investments and other initiatives.

UCSD has a student-led initiative called "Own Your Impact" to encourage members of the campus community to conserve water, waste, food, and energy.

The University of Washington won top honors in the magazine's rankings, and Green Mountain College in Vermont was second.
