CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A South Bay soccer coach accused of molesting a 16-year-old boy over a six-month period must stand trial on eight felony counts, a judge ruled Thursday.

Prosecutors also presented evidence alleging a sexual assault against a second boy, but a misdemeanor sexual battery charge involving that minor was dismissed at the conclusion of a daylong preliminary hearing for Luiz Roberto Raymundo, said Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador.

Raymundo, 61, met the 16-year-old alleged victim during informal youth soccer lessons the defendant gave in various South Bay locales, according to Chula Vista police.

According to CVPD Capt. Gary Wedge, Raymundo told the boy he had connections, and that with additional private lessons, he could prepare him for a professional soccer career in Brazil.

At the time of his April 12 arrest, Raymundo was living in a motor home behind the 600 block of Anita Street in Chula Vista. A police search of the vehicle allegedly turned up evidence that suggested other juveniles may have been victimized, Wedge said.

South Bay Judge Francis Devaney ruled that enough evidence had been presented for Raymundo to proceed to trial on charges that include oral copulation and sodomy, Arraignment in Superior Court was set for Aug. 30.
