Old Globe looking for new leading man in "Rocky Horror Show"

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Old Globe Theatre is looking for a new leading man for its upcoming production of "The Rocky Horror Show" following the abrupt departure of acclaimed Broadway actor James Barbour.

Barbour's exit, announced Thursday, comes just days after San Diego media publicized the actor's past admissions that he seduced a 15-year-old girl in New York.

In a news release, Old Globe Executive Producer Lou Spisto said Thursday that Barbour was leaving the show, set to open Sept. 23, due to issues with his wife's pregnancy. The 45-year-old Barbour issued a similar statement on his Facebook page. Hew was to have portrayed transvestite Frank-N-Furter.

In 2001, Barbour seduced a girl who visited him backstage after a performance of "Jane Eyre" on Broadway, according to published reports. He pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child in 2008 in exchange for prosecutors dropping felony charges against the actor.

As part of his plea agreement, Barbour is required to mention his past criminal history to future employers. It was not immediately clear whether Old Globe officials knew of the incident prior to an article appearing in The San Diego Union-Tribune several days ago.
