SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver was killed Friday afternoon when he crashed the sport utility vehicle he was driving on a Sorrento Valley street, apparently while trying to elude approaching California Highway Patrol officers.

Witnesses reported seeing the man driving erratically and throwing beer cans out of the SUV near the intersection of Interstates 5 and 805 shortly before 3:30 p.m., the CHP reported.

Several Highway Patrol units located the suspect's vehicle on Sorrento Valley Boulevard a short time later. As the officers approached, the motorist sped off, then lost control of the SUV near Sorrento Valley Road, causing it veer off the roadway and overturn.

The driver was partially ejected and died at the scene, according to the CHP. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.
