RANCHO PENASQUITOS (CNS) - A man who struck a recycling business employee and stole his cell phone in an attempt to rob the business was sought by police Saturday, San Diego police said.

The suspect allegedly followed an employee into Earth Wiz, 9999 Carmel Mountain Road, at about 8:45 a.m., Friday, police said. The suspect reportedly struck the employee and demanded cash.

The suspect told the thief he did not have any money, police said. The suspect asked about the safe and the employee pointed toward it.

The robber checked the safe, but it contained no money, police said. The suspect then ransacked the business and took the employee's cell phone before riding away on a red BMX-type bicycle.

The suspect was last seen headed south on Carmel Mountain Road. He was described as a black male between 18 and 20 years old with short dread locks and brown eyes, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and Dickies pants.
