OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A 14-year-old girl who did not return home after taking out the trash was found safe Monday at a library, accompanied by a 24-year-old man, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

Makaylia Williams was spotted by a citizen who recognized her description, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Mata said.

The girl and the man were questioned by officers, and it appeared that she left home on her own, the lieutenant said.

Mata said the teen took off about 6:20 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of Marquette Street, near Santa Barbara Street. The girl's mother reported her missing about an hour later.

Police found a bag of trash, identified by the girl's mother as the one her daughter had taken out of the apartment, with its contents on the ground, Mata said.

The woman said the family is new to the area and her daughter has few friends, he said.

Police launched a search for the girl involving 20 officers, a helicopter and bloodhounds, Mata said.
