Hurricane Irene heads toward Hispaniola and US

Posted: Updated:

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hurricane Irene is heading on a course that could take it to the U.S. mainland by the end of the week.

The storm cut power to more than a million people in Puerto Rico, downing trees and flooding streets. There were no reports of deaths or major injuries, but Gov. Luis Fortuno has declared a state of emergency, and urged people to stay indoors.

The first hurricane of the Atlantic storm season poses an immediate threat to the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, though the center of the hurricane is expected to miss neighboring Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola.

The storm is expected to head toward the Bahamas. Authorities are warning people in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina to follow it closely since its path is uncertain.
