SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 25-year-old woman who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident was a Pauma Valley mother of three, the county's Medical Examiner's Office reported Tuesday.

Candice Marie Nelson was struck about 4 a.m. Monday while walking on the north shoulder of state Route 76 near South Grade Road, the Medical Examiner's office said.

Nelson was reportedly hit by a 2002 Ford Taurus whose driver swerved but was unable to avoid her, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Parent.

The driver sped off, then left the car nearby and fled with his two passengers in the area of Valley Center Road, the officer said.

Rickey Burns, 69, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, and the passengers were released, according to Parent.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman in her late 20s was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash Monday while walking alongside state Route 76, and a man matching the driver's description was taken into custody for questioning a short time later, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was hit by a 2002 Ford Taurus about 3:30 a.m. near Harolds Road, according to CHP Officer Chris Parent.

The driver braked but failed to stop, then abandoned the vehicle in a parking lot off the highway near Valley Center Road, Parent said.

A man who may have been behind the wheel of the Taurus was taken into custody outside a market near the intersection of Valley Center and Golsh roads, Parent said, adding that alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The highway was closed for a time while officers investigated the crash. All lanes were reopened just after 11 a.m.
