Gas prices on the rise across San Diego County

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose three-tenths of a cent Thursday to $3.736, the fifth increase in six days following a 16-day streak of decreases.

The average price is 2 cents more than one week ago and 63 cents higher than at this time last year, but 8 cents lower than a month ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

The average price rose four-tenths of a cent on Saturday and two-tenths of a cent on Sunday, was unchanged on Monday and rose nine-tenths of a cent Tuesday and six-tenths of a cent Wednesday.

The rising pump prices reflect recent increases in the price of crude oil.

The price of a barrel of benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange had settled at $79.30 on Aug. 9, the lowest since Sept. 29, rose to $85.54 Tuesday, then fell to $85.16 Wednesday.

Crude oil costs account for two-thirds to three-quarters of the price of a gallon of gasoline, according to Tupper Hull of the Western States Petroleum Association, a trade association representing oil companies in six western states.
