LA MESA (CNS) - A 27-month-old boy was being treated Friday for non-life-threatening head injuries that he suffered when he was struck in a hit-and-run accident while alone on a road in La Mesa.

The toddler was struck in the eastbound lanes of Fletcher Parkway near the intersection with Trolley Court around 7:50 p.m. Thursday, according to a La Mesa Police Department statement.

The vehicle that hit the boy was described as a white minivan or sport utility vehicle with a luggage rack on top, possibly a Volkswagen, police said.

The boy's parents were home at the time of the crash, La Mesa police Sgt. Bret Richards told The San Diego Union-Tribune. The boy had wandered away from his home, according to the newspaper.

The child was taken to Rady Children's Hospital to be treated for head injuries, which police described as non-life-threatening.

La Mesa police asked anyone with information about the accident to call (619) 667-1400 or to contact Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
