SDG&E propose upgrade to major gas lines around county

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prompted in part by last year's deadly natural gas transmission line explosion near San Francisco, San Diego Gas & Electric has proposed that its ratepayers fund a $600 million, 10-year upgrade of major lines looping the county, it was reported Saturday.

About 102 miles of large-diameter pipelines, built in the 1950s, would be replaced during the two-phase project, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

SDG&E has been unable to locate construction or testing records for about 30 percent of its large-scale gas transmission lines, and has lowered the pressure of natural gas in those lines as a result, a local news source reported.
