SAN DIEGO (CBS 8)-- A carjacking suspect is in custody after leading San Diego Police on a short pursuit through the streets of downtown San Diego.
Police say it started at 11th Avenue and E Street and ended at Broadway and Harbor Drive.
Just minutes after the violent carjacking, the victim, Nyng Qu, spoke to News 8.
Qu says he had stopped for a red light when the suspect started yelling at him. His 2001 Honda was still in drive when the suspect forced him out and started punching him.
Fearing the man had a gun, Qu gave up his car. As soon as the carjacker sped away, Qu got on his cell phone and called 911.
But before dispatchers even put out the call, an officer had spotted the vehicle driving erratically on the wrong side of the road, avoiding traffic and running signal lights.
An officer initiated a pursuit on Broadway, through the middle of downtown. At one point during the chase, the suspect hit another car and kept going, before finally bailing out at Broadway and Harbor Drive.
Police say the suspect will be charged with carjacking, as well as a variety of other charges related to the pursuit.
As for Qu, he says his face hurts and he's understandably shaken up to the point where he plans to finish up his masters, then leave San Diego and head home.
