San Diego County fire burns 350 acres

Posted: Updated:

PALA, Calif. (AP) - High temperatures and low humidity are making it difficult for firefighters battling a wildfire on a northern San Diego County Indian reservation.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Daniel Berlant says the 350-acre blaze has forced the evacuation of about 35 homes on the Pala Indian Reservation. There is zero containment. About 600 firefighters are being aided by three helicopters and several air tankers.

Berlant says firefighters are making good progress against another wildfire in Ramona that broke out Monday afternoon. That blaze has burned about 100 acres. It initially threatened an unknown number of homes in San Diego Country Estates.

Firefighters have fully contained a 455-acre wildfire in the Winchester area of Riverside County. Fire officials say there was minor damage to two homes and two outbuildings.

PALA (CNS) - A 300-acre wildfire in the Pala area that may have been sparked by a vehicle crash prompted authorities to issue an evacuation order.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department used a reverse 911 system to deliver the evacuation message to 37 phone numbers in the vicinity of Rancho Heights and Magee roads several hours into the firefighting effort.

The fire broke out about 10:35 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Pala Temecula and Moro roads, according to Cal Fire Capt. Mike Mohler. About 300 firefighters were battling the blaze, with zero containment by mid- afternoon, he said, though no structures had been damaged nor injuries reported as of 3:45 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol reported on its website that a Toyota Camry hit a pole and caught fire about 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of Pala Temecula and Moro roads, but the official cause of the wildfire remained under investigation.

Pala Temecula Road was closed from Pala Mission Road to Moro Road, the CHP reported.
