SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 71-year-old woman who allegedly lost control of her PT Cruiser and crashed into a bus bench in City Heights, killing a mother and seriously injuring the victim's 4-year-old son and boyfriend, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at the downtown courthouse.

Investigators said the driver, Jean Chizer-Williams, was experiencing severe low-blood sugar due to diabetes when she lost control of her vehicle about 7:55 p.m. on June 4 in the 4800 block of University Avenue.

Vanessa Mae Shane, 25, was killed.

People who viewed a surveillance tape of the crash said the victim saw the vehicle coming and stepped in front of her boyfriend, David Abilez, after making sure her son Elijah was out of the way.

Chizer-Williams was not cited after the accident, pending the outcome of a traffic investigation, police said.

She was booked into jail Monday on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter. Bail was set at $110,000.
