Speeding driver hits, kills woman out for a hike

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman on a hike with her family was struck and killed by a car as she crossed a San Diego street.

Joan Milazzo, 56, was struck as she crossed in the 14900 block of Camino Del Sur, near San Dieguito Road, about 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. She had been hiking with her husband and sister.

Milazzo was struck by a Nissan Sentra driven by a 24-year-old man traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.

The driver lost control of the car and skidded into Milazzo as she stepped onto a curb, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Bystanders called 911 and Milazzo was taken to a hospital where was pronounced dead at 10:57 a.m., despite resuscitative efforts.

Police continued to investigate.
