High surf batters San Diego's beaches

SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - San Diego County beachgoers this Labor Day weekend will be privy to big waves caused by a southwest swell that originated from a powerful storm near New Zealand.

According to the National Weather Service, waves will be in the 5- to 8-foot range through Sunday. A high surf advisory issued earlier in the week was extended for the county through 9 p.m. Sunday.

Dangerous rip currents will also be found at area beaches but gradually will subside late in the weekend, the Weather Service advised.

Highs along the coast are expected to be mostly in the 70s throughout the weekend. In the valleys and mountains, it will be in the 80s and low 90s, and in the deserts, triple-digit highs are likely, the Weather Service reported.

The big waves will continue throughout the holiday weekend. Lifeguards say if you are not an experienced swimmer stay out of the water.
