Driver arrested after CHP pursuit from L.A. to Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver making a run for the border was stopped in Chula Vista after a two-hour chase that started in Los Angeles County.

Jose Alberto Meza, 22, was arrested on E Street offramp from Interstate 5 about 8:30 p.m. Saturday after California Highway Patrol officers flattened the tires on his Toyota Corolla, using spike strips, according to the CHP.

Meza surrendered at gunpoint without a struggle, but he had told his mother in a cell phone conversation that he did not intend on being taken alive if stopped before crossing the border, a CHP officer told the newspaper. A Glock 9 mm pistol was found in the glove box of the car, and two loaded magazines were found in the center console, according to the CHP.

"It had the potential to turn ugly real quick," CHP Officer Jason Graham told the newspaper.

The chase started in Santa Fe Springs about 6:30 p.m. and headed south through Orange County on I-5. Spike strips were used on the car in Solana Beach and near Sea World, and the Toyota was on its rims by the time it came to a stop, with a nudge from a CHP cruiser.

Meza was booked on suspicion of evading police and the illegal possession of a firearm.
