SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A mental competency trial was scheduled at the downtown San Diego courthouse Tuesday for a gang member accused of killing a rival gangster outside a Lincoln Park liquor store in 2008.

Martrell Johnson, 20, is charged with second-degree murder in the Oct. 20, 2008 fatal shooting of 20-year-old Joel Carmichael outside Dr. J's liquor store. The defendant is also charged with felony carjacking and two felony counts of second-degree burglary, according to jail records.

Johnson was arrested within months of the slaying, along with three co-defendants, including his older brother.

Martray Johnson, Michael Anthony Allen and Marquise Grady have all since been convicted and sentenced for their roles in the shooting.
