SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins will return to San Diego Wednesday following an eight-month independent deployment to the Western Pacific and Middle East, the Navy announced.

Around 300 sailors defended the Al Basra Oil Terminal in Iraq, took part in ballistic missile defense operations, conducted an exercise with the Royal Thai Navy and worked on maritime security operations with the Maldives Coast Guard, according to the Navy.

The ship also participated in exercises with the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which is due back Friday.

The vessel is named after Marine Col. William R. Higgins, who was killed after being captured by Hezbollah fighters in 1990 in Lebanon.
