SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Two underage suspects were in custody in connection with the rape of two teenage girls in Rancho Penasquitos last weekend, police announced Friday.

The suspects, both 16, were identified, taken into custody and booked into Juvenile Hall Thursday. They face multiple charges.

One of the suspects lives within 100 yards of where the assaults took place and was arrested in the Black Mountain area, SDPD Sex Crimes Unit Commander Det. Rudy Tai said. The second suspect was arrested in Palm City and lives in National City.

The assault happened last Saturday evening. Two girls, aged 15 and 16, were attending a family party near the intersection of Rideabout Lane and Spindletop Road in Park Village when they decided to go for a walk.

According to investigators, the girls were approached from behind by two Hispanic males and forced by knifepoint into a wooded area where they were assaulted for up to 30 minutes. The suspects fled when one of the girls' parents came looking for them.

In a press conference Friday afternoon, Councilwoman Sherri Lightner praised the work of the police department and the victims' cooperation in identifying the suspects.

"This was a horrific crime that rightly incensed the community of Rancho Penasquitos and the entire city," Lightner said.
