Cardiff kook honors the anniversary of 9/11

Posted: Updated:

CARDIFF (CNS) - The "Cardiff Kook" pranksters are at it again, but on this day -- Sept. 11 -- the often-mocked surfer is performing a more-somber role.

The giant statute of a teen on a surfboard was discovered this weekend dressed as a New York City firefighter, wearing oxygen tanks, an NYFD fire helmet and carrying an American flag. A placard says "never forget."

Anonymous artists have often struck the statue, which was erected three years ago. Earlier this summer, someone built a giant fabric and metal pterodactyl and made it look like the surfer was being carried off as a dino-dinner.

The statute has been dubbed the "Kook," and has been modified to look like a topless dancer, reggae musician, Oprah Winfrey and perhaps most-famously, dinner for a hungry shark.
