SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Build a better burger and the carnivores will carve a path to your door. At least, that's what they're hoping at Bergie's.
"What separates us is the ingredients that we use, as far as the Certified Angus Beef that's grass-fed. No hormones, anything and the buns from Bread and Cie here locally, which really put us on the map," Mike Berg said.
Speaking of on the map, Bergie's location on San Diego Avenue is a 'tweener.
"We call it not. It's not Old Town and it's not Mission Hills. It's not," Mike said.
What Bergie's is, is a no-frills haven for all-American fare.
Bergie's seems an unlikely backdrop for a 40-year-old love store that began in San Luis Obispo, when a 12-year-old Mike Berg got a crush on a classmate named Karen.
"Surely admired her from afar in high school. All those years, just out of my league," he said.
Mike moved to San Diego, Karen to Fresno. Then, 40 years later…
"A friend talked me into connecting on Facebook, hooking up and punched in the year I graduated in high school and all these people just jumped back into my life, and she was one of them. And my heart skipped a beat," Mike said.
In the fall of 2010, Karen and Mike reconnected and fell in love. In January, they opened Bergie's.
"It was meant to be, that's the way we think," Mike said.
So now this novella of social networking has come full circle from affairs of the heart to heart-clogging burgers, and the moral of the story: you're never too old for tater tots.
