Judge will decide if accused bomb maker goes to trial

Posted: Updated:

VISTA (CNS) - A preliminary hearing was scheduled to begin Wednesday for an Escondido man accused of possessing explosives and converting fireworks into bombs in his home.

Richard Hinkel was arrested about 5 a.m. on Nov. 28 after he was heard screaming in his backyard in the 2300 block of Country View Glen. Officers who went to investigate the screaming found 18 explosive devices, 12 rifles, 10 handguns and fireworks, according to Escondido police.

The Bomb/Arson Unit from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department confiscated the explosives and guns, police said.

A judge will decide at the end of the preliminary hearing if there is enough evidence to order Hinkel to stand trial on multiple felony counts of possession of a destructive device.

Deputy District Terri Perez has said there was no reason to have the explosives other than to blow up things.

A motive was unclear.
