Judge rejects new trial bid in AZ sweat lodge case

Posted: Updated:

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — A self-help author convicted of negligent homicide won't get a new trial as requested.

Yavapai County Judge Warren Darrow denied the motion from James Arthur Ray's attorneys during a hearing Wednesday in Prescott.

Ray's attorneys had claimed that prosecutors engaged in a pattern of misconduct during the case that deprived Ray of a fair trial.

Prosecutor Sheila Polk says that the state committed a trio of unintentional errors that did not impact the jury's verdict.

A jury found Ray guilty on three counts of negligent homicide on June 22 after four months of testimony.

Three people died following an October 2009 sweat lodge ceremony Ray led near Sedona.

Ray is awaiting sentencing.
