San Diego considering closing 10 schools

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego is considering closing 10 schools to help deal with a budget crisis.

The San Diego Union-Tribune says the school board on Tuesday authorized procedures that will start with a series of community meetings and could lead to school closures next fall.

Officials say the decision could save the school district up to $5 million. It's expected to run a $57 million budget deficit next year.

The schools have to meet criteria for closure that included low or falling enrollment and poor academic performance. Thirty schools meet the criteria.
