Firefighters track down foul odor in Carmel Mountain

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - According to San Diego firefighters, the strange odor that permeated the air in the 12200 block of Carmel Mountain Road was not a natural gas leak, it was a foul stench coming from an EZ Lube storage tank.

It happened at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.

An electronics company in the area called 911 after many of their workers started feeling sick. The employees said they felt light-headedness and tingling lips.

Gas detection meters helped firefighters search eight square blocks to discover where the smell was coming from.

It turns out the EZ Lube oil change shop has a holding tank that catches excess run-off grease and oil. An environmental tanker was pumping out the tank from the shop stirring up the strange odor. There has been no hazard to any of the residents.
