OCEANSIDE (CNS) - Students at Garrison Elementary School will still have musical instruments to play thanks to the quick work of the Oceanside Fire Department during a blaze in the school's music building, department official released Sunday.
The fire broke out at approximately 4:15 p.m. Saturday. Personnel responded to the school's fire alarm ringing and found a portable classroom in the rear area of school property aflame.
Fire was also lapping the roof through a broken window, battalion chief Robert Dunham said. Many instruments, valued at approximately $30,000, were saved from the flames. The majority of the string instruments were saved with little damage to their cases, Dunham said.
Structure damage was estimated at $150,000. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
