Authorities released the name Thursday of a Clairemont man who was fatally knifed after he allegedly sneaked into a Pacific Beach apartment, threatened three residents with a replica pistol and tried to rob them of medical marijuana.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A masked man carrying a replica pistol sneaked into a Pacific Beach apartment early Wednesday, awoke several residents and tried to rob them of marijuana, prompting a struggle during which he was fatally knifed, authorities reported.

San Diego police got an emergency call about the stabbing a few blocks from Crystal Pier shortly before 6 a.m., homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

Officers arrived in the neighborhood to find a mortally wounded 23-year-old man being tended to by a friend on the north side of Emerald Street, according to Rooney. The stabbing victim died at the scene about five minutes later, despite medics' lifesaving attempts. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.

Following a fresh trail of blood leading away from where the dead man lay, police determined that the stabbing had occurred at a nearby rental residence on Bayard Street, SDPD Capt. Jim Collins told reporters.

At the apartment, officers found two men and a woman in their 20s who described being awoken and confronted by a burglar who had his face covered, was wearing gloves and was carrying what appeared to be a handgun. The intruder apparently had climbed in through a window, the captain said.

The residents said the burglar demanded marijuana and threatened them, leading to a fight during which he was stabbed in the chest. He then ran out of the home and telephoned a friend, who made a 911 call.

Following the suspected burglar's death, police found the fake gun underneath his body, Rooney said.

Officers who went into the victims' house discovered a cannabis "grow operation," Collins told a local news station. The residents were detained for questioning and were expected to be released pending further investigation.

Detectives were trying to determine whether the stabbing, which occurred as the suspected burglar was scuffling with the two male occupants of the apartment, was a case of legally justifiable self-defense, the captain said.

The intruder may have been known to the residents, according to broadcast news reports.
