Latest attempt ends in disappointment for 62-year-old swimmer

MIAMI (AP) — With her face and body swollen from Portuguese Man O' War stings, endurance athlete Diana Nyad has given up her latest attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida.

The 62-year-old swimmer had completed about half of the 103-mile journey when she decided to quit. Her team says medics worried that the toxins were building up and another sting could be life-threatening.

Nyad team member Vanessa Linsley said the swimmer was disappointed and emotional.

Swimming from Cuba to Florida is a lifelong dream that Nyad first tried as a 28-year-old back in 1978, when she swam inside a steel shark cage for about 42 hours before ending the attempt.

This time she was trying to do it without a cage, relying on electronic equipment to deter sharks.

An asthma attack forced her to abandon an attempt in August.
