SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Red shoes were in fashion Wednesday on the streets of San Diego. News 8 joined over 1,000 volunteers to help raise money for Ronald McDonald House.
If you woke up to hooting and hollering in your neighborhood Wednesday, it was all for a great cause. Energetic volunteers were out early in support of Red Shoe Day.
"We've got 1,000 people out collecting money for Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Ronald McDonald House, where we can take care of families. Those families have kids in the hospital, so what we try to do is get them as close as we can so they can help their kids get better fast," Ronald McDonald House President and CEO Chuck Day said.
Ronald McDonald has some big shoes to fill. Among those filling up red shoes was our Carlo Cecchetto, and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher also lent his support to the cause.
Volunteer McKenney Deerborn was a former Children's Hospital patient. Her family stayed at Ronald McDonald House.
"They provided food for my little siblings and parents staying there. They took really good care fo them. So this is close to the heart, definitely," Deerborn said.
They were dancing in the streets in Rancho Bernardo, and Kimberly King joined a spirited group of volunteers at UTC.
In the end, the $74,000
collected from generous San Diegans ended up at Ronald McDonald House, where it
will provide hope and comfort and healing for families in distress. Now that's
worth shouting about.
