US fugitive wants to serve time in Portugal

Posted: Updated:

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — The lawyer for an American hijacker and convicted killer who was a fugitive for 41 years will argue that his client should serve the rest of his jail time in Portugal instead of being extradited to the United States.

Attorney Manuel Luis Ferreira says he will argue George Wright deserves to stay because he has lived in the country for decades and has a Portuguese wife and Portuguese children.

Ferreira made the comments late Thursday in an interview with Portugal's TVI television.

He says Wright arrived in Portugal in 1978. The 68-year-old Wright also spent years in the 1980s living in Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony in West Africa.

The lawyer says Wright's grown children knew nothing about his past until his capture this week.
